Commercial Biodiesel Plants

Models on this page are built using Industrial Grade components such as explosion proof pumps, all black iron lines, Integrated control panels, etc.  Most processors on this page come in modular units, on steel frames, that can be connected together quickly upon arrival.  Most also have 1-2 common manifolds where fluids come in and go out to simplify connection to your storage tanks, water lines and drain lines.  All the electrical will be completed and integrated into the modular units requiring minimal wiring at your site.  Setup time should be less than a day excluding your storage tanks and building plumbing and electrical.  In other words, once you have your building plumbing in place, it will take about 1/2 day to connect our plants into your system.

And, for larger processors, we offer a highly discounted small processor to be delivered immediately, for your crew and yourself to learn and experiment with.  This would be our model EZ80 or EZ40 on our smaller processor page.

USED OIL- If your used oil will come pre-filtered, water removed and titrates at less than an acid number of 3-4, there is no additional costs.  But to build a system to process used oil that doesn't meet these criteria will cost approximately 75% MORE than the base prices listed below.  For details on why it costs additional to process used oil, go HERE

Model C180-a Biodiesel Processing Plant

Great for Farmers, municipalities, Trucking companies etc

Makes 180 gallons of finished Biodiesel per Day, (average)

(note: photo shows 3 large tanks.  This model only has 1 500 gallon tank)

This utilizes a 500 gallon tank which processes 375 gallons at a time.  But it takes about 2 days to complete, so the average amount per day is 180 gallons.

This is a commercial processor utilizing several commercial grade improvements over our non Commercial grade processors.  Examples of the differences would be-

  • Uses 1 large 500 gallon tank instead of smaller 110 gallon tanks.  This larger tank allows for less time making biodiesel, but it does cost more than 3 smaller tanks.

  • Uses a commercial duty Explosion proof processing pump which flows at 50gpm for a powerful mixing action, (actual 50gpm, compare to our smaller pumps 12gpm rated, actual 8-10gpm flow).  NOTE: Anyone who use multiple small water pumps to try and mix this volume of biodiesel is fooling you.  You NEED this much more powerful, and more expensive pump.  This pump is nearly 2 feet long and weighs about 70lbs.  MUCH more heavy duty than the normal biodiesel processor pump.  Costs 20 times as much as our smaller pumps.  Click photo to view larger image

  • Methoxide mixing pump is an Explosion Proof air powered diaphragm pump that is very efficient and costs about 10 times as much as the mixing pump on our smaller processors.

  • More powerful 13KW inline heater with low watt density heating elements, digital thermostat, flow control switch (Prevents heaters from coming on unless oil is flowing) and relay panel to activate the heating elements.  Can also be used to warm the biodiesel if needed. You can also use this heater to reheat the biodiesel if needed.  You still must be careful when heating biodiesel with residual methanol in it though, although our low watt density heaters are much cooler per square inch than normal heating elements.

  • Uses 1" & 1 1/4" black iron pipe, fittings and valves for full flow capability.  Using all black iron pipe instead of poly hoses costs much more, but will last forever.  These sizes will give you a full flow capability needed to quickly and efficiently process larger batches like this.

  • Comes with 4 misters installed instead of one.  4 misters will more effectively cover the larger tank surface allowing for quicker wash times.

  • Comes with a timer controlled water valve which allows for precise, reliable mist wash times.  Also allows you to fill the tank unattended when preparing for a bubble wash.  This is NOT a cheap hardware store garden timer.  Includes the same type of timer used to control the processor pump and a high quality electric shutoff valve.

  • Catalyst hopper to dispense the catalyst without opening the lid of the methoxide tank

  • Mounted on a sturdy Steel Cage/skid frame for easy maneuverability using a forklift or pallet jack (steel frame not shown in the photo).  Both tanks are mounted to this frame making them one movable unit.

  • Integrated distribution manifold - all feedstock and drain lines will terminate in one location on the skid frame allowing for easy hookup on site.

  • Easy electrical hookup.  Will require only One power line to be run to the processor.  Everything else will be pre-wired and ready to go once the electrical power is supplied.  Requires a 15kw service line.

  • More sophisticated control panel integrating all controls in one panel which will control everything.  This panel will control the processor pump, methoxide pump, Pre-heating pump, and will control the heating elements with a digital thermostat, temperature gauge.  Will only require an electrician to run one line to the processor as everything else will be pre-wired in the frame mounted processor control panel.

  • Comes with an external 500 gallon drying tank and dedicated drying pump

  • The methoxide mixer is a 110 gallon mixing tank with custom made screens to keep the catalyst in suspension for quick and thorough mixing.

  • Comes with a large, Stainless steel scale that allows you to precisely measure out the required amount of catalyst all at once.  This scale is large enough to set a bucket on.

(Note: we have a model exactly like this, but WITHOUT the features above, requiring more onsite setup and installation, etc.  This model is our EZ375 and runs a few thousand less.  More information HERE)

Model C-550-a Biodiesel Processing Plant

Click photos for larger view

Model C-550-a Biodiesel Processing Plant

Makes 550 gallons of finished Biodiesel Per Day

or 190,000 gallons per year

This Processing Plant allows you to produce 550 gallons per day from NEW De-gummed cooking oil.  Once the batch finishes in about 1 1/2 hours, you transfer the biodiesel to the first settling & washing tank & start another batch in the processing tank.  You then do the same thing until you have filled all settling tanks.  You can also process one more batch & leave it in the processor to settle & be washed in the processing tank as your processor will also be plumbed to settle & wash the Biodiesel.

You now have 1125 gallons of Biodiesel.  After 10-12 hours it can be drained of the glycerin and then washed & dried.  The whole process will take about 1 1/2 - 3 days to complete (depending on how many hours a day it's attended to), then you can start another 1125 gallon process.   This is completely reacted, washed, and dried in about 2 - 3 days.  If you read about another processor completing a batch in just 2 hours, it's probably not washed or dried.  We give you realistic figures, not hype.

Click on the photo below for sample of unwashed vs. washed fuel

With this processor you can produce over 190,000 gallons per year.  (Examples only, actual yield may vary)

Production examples:

  • 1100 gallons in 2 days ( assuming 10-12 hour days) averages 550 gallons per day

  • 550 gallons times 350 days - 192,500 gallons per year

  • This is assuming a 7 day work week, a 10-12 hour day & 15 days off per year.  Note that when washing, someone can spend less than about 1 hour per day getting the wash cycles going.  This processor DOES NOT require hands on time all day, every day.  The average hands on time per cycle of 1100 gallons will be approximately 8-9 hours total from start to finish leaving time for paperwork, logging, testing, etc.

Comes with the following major items-

Qty Description for model C-550-a
1

Processing tank

Click photo for larger view.

500 gallon Processing tank (tank on the right) which produces 375 gallons of Biodiesel per batch & can also settle & wash the fuel with the built in 2 stage water washing system.

Photo shows the model C-550-a installed at a location in Kansas.  The tank on the right is the processor & the 2 tanks on the left are the settling/ washing tanks.

Note that this model Does NOT have a separate heating tank but is an option.  A pre-heating tank simply cuts down the amount of time required to run all 3 batches by letting you pre-heat in one tank while processing in the processor at the same time.  So it allows you to complete a batch in less overall time.  That tank would be located on the right.

Also, we now ship this processor in steel framed enclosures which will totally enclose the processor with the frame and be forklift-able.  But you will still have total access to the entire processor.  The frame will basically be square steel tubing around all sides (there will not be side panels, just the frame).  To view a rough drawing of the frame click HERE.

With this system you bring the oil in using the pump on the processing tank, then begin heating with the inline heater & heating pump.  This takes roughly 1.5-2 hours.  While the oil is heating you can begin mixing the methoxide.  After heating the oil, add the methoxide, set the timer for 90 minutes and let it run.

Once the pump shuts off you transfer the batch to a settling, wash tank and begin another in the processor.

After the third batch shuts off you leave it in the processor for 12 hours then begin washing all the fuel.

Note: De-gummed oil is recommended.  Non de-gummed oil is not guaranteed to make ASTM quality fuel, but may be possible with the right oil if you wish to experiment with it.  We can work with you to set up a de-gumming system if needed.

2 Settling & Washing tanks

500 gallon Total Drain Settling & Washing tanks. These tanks are plumbed for glycerin separation & draining; water washing & draining; fuel transfer, methanol venting, etc.

All tanks in this system are vented through hoses to the outdoors via a venting manifold (except open top drying tank).  Will require you to run 1 vent line out of your building.

1 Pre-heating tank (optional)

Dedicated Pre-heating tank.  Allows you to circulate the oil and pre-heat a batch while another is processing in the processing tank.  Comes with a thermostatically controlled inline heater with digital thermometer.

Price- $2,500.00

1 Methoxide Mixing Tank

110 gallon Methoxide Mixing Tank

With explosion proof Commercial grade pump and clog free tank.  Uses a catalyst suspension system to avoid clogging and to make dissolving the catalyst easier.  Average mixing time is less than 10 minutes.

Does not require you to open the tank at all, for safety & simplicity.

Methoxide tank is the small 100 gallon tank on the right.

1 Drying Tank

1350 Gallon open top Drying Tank

Includes pump & drying heads which dry by flash evaporation in the open top tank.  Will dry one batch in less time than it takes another batch to be processed. (approximately 1 day drying time).  Uses very small amount of energy vs heated drying.

Drying tank size can be upgraded to allow for future expansion if needed.

1 Control panel

Control panel.  Centralizes several of the operating controls for bubblers, water timers, etc.  Your control panel may look different than this.  But it will centralize most of the timers for the various pumps, misters, bubblers, etc.

Will now be mounted on the processor skid frame.  Shown mounted to a back wall.

1 Digital Temperature monitoring

Digital Temperature monitoring system to monitor the temperature of the oil in the processor & the pre-heating tank.

  Ball valves

Industrial duty brass Ball valves with Reinforced Teflon seats & Stainless steel plated brass ball

(stainless steel valves are optional.  The primary advantage to stainless is long term durability and less metal contamination of the fuel, but brass should have minimal contamination anyway since the balls are stainless or chromed and the seats are Teflon)

3 Water wash system

Heavy duty, Electrically controlled water timers for Water wash system.  Water wash uses University approved method of washing with a mist wash first, then several bubble washes.

Misters are commercial grade, stainless steel and can handle up to 1000 PSI.  Note: high pressure system is optional and will speed up the water wash process.

Price for high pressure booster: $975.00

Misters are controlled by a common timer.

Each bubble wash system is timer controlled independently.

1 Processor Pump - 240 Volt Explosion Proof centrifugal pump pumps 50 gallons per minute for a strong mixing action to keep the fluids in suspension.

If you see processors using 3- small inexpensive pumps to do the same thing, it won't work.  3 cheap pumps will not keep the fluid in suspension as well as our processor pump.  And those pumps are not explosion proof.  These are commercial grade, very high quality pumps.

All lines clearly labeled to show flow direction and type of fluid the line handles. Click photo on the right for a clearer view.

1 Fuel filter & fuel polishing system.  Will consist of a high flow Racor or equivalent quality fuel filtering system Plus 1 spare fuel filter.  Will allow you to filter all fuel as it is being dried.  Then when the fuel is transferred to storage, it will receive 1 final filtering.
Installation - we will ship this item as a skid mounted system.  May come on several skids.  The skids will be steel and will also form the framework of the system.  Once it arrives you will have your plumber and electrician complete the final installation as described below.  Full details will be included with the system, along with phone support.

Plumbing - There will be 1-2 multi-port connection areas for you to connect your lines to for the methanol in, oil in, water in, waste water out, glycerin out and finished biodiesel out.  May require a plumber to do the final install to connect from the multi-port connectors to your tanks and lines, but everything on the processor & wash tanks will be plumbed and ready to go.  Will only require one water line to hook up to the multi port connection.

Electrical - Will come totally pre-wired.  The only thing left will be to have an electrician run power to the supply panel on our system.  The control panel, pumps, etc will be wired and complete when it arrives.

Ventilation - All tanks are vented to the outdoors.  Tanks will arrive plumbed to a common manifold with one output line.  You will have to run that line outside your building, or to your methanol recovery system.  You should also have adequate ventilation in the building to be able to vent any unlikely methanol spills.

Safety- Safety is left up to you, but we recommend adequate fire extinguishers or fire hoses, smoke detectors, an eye wash station, body wash station spill containment procedures and equipment, etc.

Total installation time should be less than 1 day for the plumber, and less than 1/2 day for the electrician.

To get started, you will need to have on hand, at least 150 gallons of new, de-gummed cooking oil, 50 gallons of methanol, 50lbs of KOH catalyst, and vessels or lines to handle the waste glycerin & waste water.  Plus of course storage for the finished fuel.

Testing - You may also need to check into local permits with the planning department, wastewater department, fire department etc.  If you plan to sell the fuel commercially you will need to do periodic testing of your fuel for ASTM compliance.  If you will be testing only periodically you may outsource it to a biodiesel testing lab which can be found on the internet.  If you will be testing on a regular basis you should consider purchasing a Gas Chromatagraph.  One example source can be found at: http://www.srigc.com/

Training - after your processor is completely hooked up and ready to go, call us and arrange for onsite training.  You receive 2 DAYS of onsite training with this processor plus unlimited phone & email follow-ups.

What do you need to supply with our Large Biodiesel Plants?

(model 375-a & larger)

Here's a tentative list of items you will need to supply

(note we can arrange for delivery & setup of many items, inquire about pricing) -

  • Methanol delivery lines (to deliver methanol to the methoxide mixer.  The methoxide pump on your system can draw the methoxide in if lines are plumbed to the area of our processor)

  • Methanol & the storage tanks

  • Oil Delivery Lines (to transfer new oil to the processor where the pump will pump the processor or pre-heating tank full)

  • New oil feedstock storage tanks

  • Finished fuel storage tanks

  • Catalyst & the storage vessel (you will use roughly a 5 gallon bucket of catalyst per 375 gallons, or about 25 lbs per batch)  We highly recommend KOH as it dissolves in about 10% the time of LYE.

  • Vent stack to connect the methanol vents to.  We just need a 1 1/2" or larger pipe that goes to the outdoors.  We'll have all the tanks vented on the skid system, but that will need to be run outdoors, or to the methanol recovery system.

  • You may also want a methanol recovery system for the glycerol or waste water.  We are working on a system for this, but estimated release date is late 2007.

  • Method to pump the glycerin away.  We provide drain lines, but no pump as we don't know where you will be pumping it to.

  • Waste glycerin storage tank.

  • Wastewater disposal method.  Again, we provide drain lines & will hook them up to your drain system if within 20 feet.

  • You may want to invest in a Gas Chromatograph as these are the only way to test for ASTM quality in house.  For some sources try HERE or HERE.

  • EPA Certification- can be done ONLY after making a batch of biodiesel and passing the ASTM test.  See HERE for more information.

Building requirements -

These are just some guidelines.  You will have to set your building up to conform to local & national regulations.

  • You will have to provide the necessary electrical, water, sewer, oil storage tanks, finished fuel storage, fuel transfer lines, etc.

  • Electrical - most of our larger processors require a 150 - 200 watt service capacity, or greater, 120 & 240V, 60hz.  (We can configure for 50 hz also)

  • Sewage - plan on disposing of waste water in an amount about 1 - 1.5 times the cooking oil processed.  The water will have minor amounts of methanol, glycerin, soap, catalyst & biodiesel.  These amounts are generally not considered high, but are there in varying amounts.  The wash water also has a high BOD (biological oxygen demand.  See: HERE for more information)

  • Ventilation - capable of safely venting any methanol spills or accidents.  Especially important in the methoxide mixing area.  Or you may want to construct a separate room with separate ventilation & fire suppression just for the methoxide mixer.

Processing Used Oil Commercially

We mention that our processors can handle used oil if set up to do so.  The reason we charge extra for this is that there are additional requirements for a system to handle used oil and instead of including the price for this in our base price, we opt to keep the cost down and allow you to add it separately.

Some of the additional requirements and considerations are-

  • Pre-filtering - depending on the quality of the used oil you will be using, it may require a filtration system for the incoming WVO.  The pre-filtering process may involve additional tanks for pre-settling, followed by filtration.

  • De-watering- Used oil by nature has water in it from the frying processes.  The water must be removed either by your supplier, or by yourself, which may require additional equipment.  The water removal equipment would likely be a flash evaporation system which is fairly expensive by itself. This may also add to electrical consumption as the flash evaporation is done at high temperatures.

  • Acid Esterification- Oil that titrates above about 2 - 3 may require an acid esterification process, which adds equipment, time and materials.  This process is then followed by the usual Transesterification process.

  • Two Stage Processing- by processing using a 2 stage method, we can handle slightly higher titrating oil of up to an acid number of approximately 2-4.

  • Additional materials- Requires up to double the amount of catalyst and slightly higher amounts of methanol

  • Time - Also may require additional adjustments to the process and system to get your fuel into spec due to unknown components of your feedstock.  WVO is often contaminated with numerous other chemicals such as cleaners, stabilizers, tallow etc.  May require us to work with you much longer to get your system to produce ASTM quality fuel.
